Sunday at Rimrock

Day out at Rimrock

Much fun was had this past Sunday when Mark and I hopped in the van and took Dexter down to the old town of Kinzua to visit the popular hiking trails at Rimrock in Warren, PA.

Growing up, my dad and grandpa used to take us kids there several times a year to picnic, hike and show us the back woods of a town that no longer exists. My dad left Kinzua in 1961 when the government implemented Eminent Domain to take over the land in order to build a dam. The history of the area is rich and colorful, and Johnny Cash even sang a song about the whole thing. You can listen to it below and perhaps understand the importance of this area of the US.

But rather than focus on the atrocities committed against the Native Americans, we set out to enjoy the beauty of the land on what turned out to be a rather glorious Sunday afternoon.

Rimrock Overlook

Set against the backdrop of the mighty Allegheny River in the heart of the Allegheny National Forest as part of the Allegheny Mountains, this is a popular tourist destination – especially this time of year. The vibrant colors of the autumn leaves are literally jaw dropping if you hit at the right time of year. However, the best of the fall is felt in just a few days in early to mid-October. A few days too early or too late and you will miss the truly majestic beauty of the place.

There are some amazing views to be had from the overlook area at the top of the hiking trails. Our visit was punctuated by the sound of thousands of hornets which had made their nests on the railings and made it difficult to find a place to lean out and look down. But it wasn’t a big deal, as we were there to EXPLORE!

Carved into the rocks are stone stairs which are very steep and very narrow and not for the faint of heart. At 20 weeks pregnant and carrying a squirmy toddler, I felt like a real champion when I made it down into the caves and came out amongst the beautiful trees.

Champion!

We had a great time climbing the huge boulders and sneaking into empty bear caves trying to see how far we could get. Mark had a great time climbing the steep cliff faces and trying to wield the diaper bag he carried while playing Tarzan.

And while it was hard to set Dexter down for any length of time due to the ever-present felled branches, slick rocks and other detritus, we had great fun setting him on tree trunks and stone benches, or just giving him sticks to play with. At only 20 months old, he is proving to be a real outdoorsman, and it’s nearly impossible to keep him reined in when we’re out and about.

And though he tends to look somewhat sad and desolate in photos, I can assure you that Dexter was in his element. As we walked, I told him stories that my dad used to tell me – about the Penn’s Woods Folks: little people who lived in the forest who came and went with the wind and who you could only ever see out the side of your glance. One direct look, and they’d disappear! I spent much of my childhood trying to catch a glimpse of one of these elusive sprites, and it filled my world with magic that I hope to pass on to my son.

Wind in the Hair

Once we’d had our fill of hiking (or more to the point – once my bladder and 20-week-pregnant exhaustion kicked in!), we made our way back up the mountain and sat overlooking the beautiful mountains around us while we snacked on Ritz Bitz Crackers that Mark was smart enough to bring.

The day wasn’t over yet, though! I had one more stop to make on the way home, and though the wind had kicked up a bit, it was a short hike to get there. I’m talking about the Bent Run Waterfall, an attraction which is best viewed in the spring thaw, but which is still a beautiful place to visit this time of year.

I knew Dexter would enjoy himself, as he loves anything that involves water. The train is quite indistinct at times, and when wet (as it nearly always is!), the rocks and leaves make for a treacherous journey! Lucky for us, we didn’t go very far, making it only about halfway up the trail to one of the lower falls. Had I not been pregnant and Dexter a little older, we might have ventured further, but it was enough on this day.

Mark was very much in Super Dad mode and was quite adept at holding Dexter tightly whilst jumping from rock to slippery rock across the stream so that he could get Dexter close to the fall. Amidst my worried admonishments to “BE CAREFUL,” he kept his grip and showed Dexter some nature close-ups that I just couldn’t do for myself.

I satisfied myself to show him the lichen and leaves and the little swirls where the water met the rocky shore. I showed him the leaves which fell like colorful confetti amongst us. I showed him the beauty of my hometown and how much there is to do that doesn’t involve television, video games or plastic toys.

This is the gift I can share with my boy, and I look forward to when his little brother comes and I can take him out to see it, as well.

All in all, it was a beautiful way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Sunday at Sea World

This past Sunday, we decided to meet up with one of my long lost high school friends and her adorable five month old son for a bit of a catch up. The agreed meeting place? Sea World Orlando. And what a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

Sea World Sign

Upon our arrival, we had to stand in line to get our new season passes. Mark ordered them online so that we can go any time we want to. They are good for a year, and we were able to do it on a payment plan where we pay a little bit each month rather than a big lump sum. The plan we got also includes parking, which was great since it turned out to be $14 a day!

Once we’d got our passes (which didn’t take long at all!), we had to get our bag checked by security (it was full of snacks, bottles and diapers for Dexter) and then wait our turn to go through the turnstile. Inside, we waited for my friend, Lori, to show up so we could explore.

While we waited, we helped ourselves to one of the complimentary maps which had all the show times listed on it. Dexter took great pleasure in standing by himself searching the map for fun stuff to do.

Once Lori came through, we took her lead and went to go and see the dolphins. There are specific times when you can actually FEED the dolphins, but at the point we went through, they were just doing viewings. Still, it was great fun (though very crowded!), and Mark held Dexter at the water’s edge, where the amazing creatures came up to be petted and took turns leaping out of the water.

Watching Dolphins

Because it was so crowded, we decided to go inside where we could view the dolphins from underneath the water. It definitely helped that that area was air conditioned!

We had some amazing views of the dolphins up close, and Dexter was mesmerised by them, reaching out to try and touch them through the glass.

Dolphin Tank

Once we’d had enough time with the dolphins, we braved the 45 minute line to go and see the Turtle Trek, a three part experience where we got to see some amazing fish, turtles and manatees!

Dexter was again mesmerised watching the fish through the glass.

Fish Tank

At the end of the Turtle Trek is a giant 3D 360 degree movie experience where you get to follow the life of one turtle from hatching out of his egg to making it out to sea, with all of the dangers that that entails. From seagulls trying to eat them, to underwater pollution to being caught in fishing nets, it is a beautiful movie that everyone can enjoy. Dexter obviously wouldn’t keep his 3D glasses on, but Mark simply hefted him onto his shoulders, and the kid was hooked watching the entire room become one giant movie screen.

I must admit that I did end up crying my eyes out at the film. A combination of being sensitive to animal suffering and having raging pregnancy hormones meant I couldn’t keep the tears from falling hard and fast. Mark thought it was adorable.

Unfortunately the Turtle Trek experience is pretty hard if you have small children in tow, and it is even harder when you are pregnant and the heat is immense. As they didn’t allow strollers inside, poor Lori had to carry her baby the entire way, and though Dexter walked for much of it, there were times we had to carry him as well. Plus, given there was nowhere to sit down the whole way through and the nearly 60 minutes we were in there, it meant we were completely exhausted when it was over.

We decided then to get some lunch and a drink and have a sit in the shade for a bit.

As Mark went and sorted out refreshments, Lori and I sat with the kids and watched them do what babies do.

New Friends

By the time we’d eaten and had a bit of a rest, it was clear that us ladies were more than a little exhausted, and we decided it was best to call it a day. Mark was a little disappointed in leaving before we had a chance to see Shamu, but he quickly reminded himself that we have passes and can go ANY time we want.

We are looking forward to going back again soon, and this time we’ll have a better idea of what to expect. I can’t wait to see what other amazing sights there are to see within this beautiful oasis they call Sea World Orlando.

Cocoa Beach Boys

Sand in my Toes

Despite the fact that Florida isn’t quite living up to my expectations so far, one of the great joys of being here is our proximity to the beach. An hour or so East or West will see us on hot sand as we anticipate the thrill of throwing our hot bodies into the cold water of the Atlantic.

Our first trip to the beach was a Sunday spent at St Pete, which was lovely, but marred only by the fact that Dexter wasn’t quite sure of the water yet. He spent most of the time helping the sand into his little pink bucket.

We have also been to a beach in Melbourne, but unfortunately, when we got there it was a Red Flag day, which meant we couldn’t swim due to the dangerous conditions. And since then, we hadn’t really made any effort to hit the beach.

But we’ve spent plenty of time in the pool, which has helped Dexter to really start ENJOYING the water, rather than just tolerate it.

So this past Sunday, we made the most of a sunny summer day and hit up Cocoa Beach.

Wading with Daddy

Dexter didn’t insist on being picked up and held the whole time. He was happy to hold our hands as he waded out into the surf, letting the waves crash into him and throw him backward, laughing uproariously the whole time.

He walked up and down the beach, catching admiring glances from scores of people, who all felt the need to comment on how beautiful his eyes are, how big he is (“He’s only 17 months?? My two year old is smaller than he is!”), and how shy he seems to be.

Splashing in the Waves

Each mouthful of sea water made him giggle, and while I was afraid the salt in his eyes might upset him, he took it all in his stride, simply enjoying himself.

He took great delight when daddy taught him that wet sand can be squeezed through his fingers and used to create giant ploppy sand sculptures.

Sand Sculptures

Everyone was covered in a thick skin of wet sand, but no one seemed to mind.

Little man and I ran into the surf, jumping waves, and I held him tightly to my chest, relishing the feeling of holding my boy while another life grows inside of me. I think to the future, and how it will feel when I have two children to watch over.  I smile silently to myself, wondering if we’ll have a little girl for me to fuss over or another fearless little boy who refuses to listen when we tell him to be careful…

Waves

Back on the beach, we take our dollar store beach ball and throw it into the air, where the wind catches it and tries to make away with it. But it, too, is coated with wet sand, and the extra weight is enough to keep it on the ground, where Dexter chases after it like a lost puppy.

Beach Ball

We have to constantly reapply sun cream to our toe-headed little guy, and as he starts to look tired, I feed him snacks and give him a bottle of milk to keep him hydrated. He drinks it up like it is the nectar of life, and I admire his little form, covered in sparkly sand like some sort of Twilight-era vampire.

Baby Blue Eyes

Eventually, after hours spent in the glorious sunshine, I feel that it is time to leave, and so I ready our possessions and we head back to the parking lot for a quick shower.

Daddy and Dexter rinse themselves off in the spray, but we’ll eventually still bring half of the beach back home with us, and it’ll be days before our hoover collects all the gritty particles from our foyer.

Beach Shower

On the way home, daddy asks who wants Dairy Queen, and we stop at the nearest one. Dexter and I share hot dogs with ketchup, mustard and relish, and we sip our Orange Julius through a shared straw.

Kisses

We also share kisses in our tiny booth, and I know that it has been a great day at the beach.
