Three Years

My Amazing Mark,

Today marks three years since the first time I saw you across a crowded pub. That day was the beginning of the best part of my life, and every day since has been a miracle.

I know things moved quite quickly between us, but even though we have had to make a lot of sacrifices and cut short that “honeymoon period” that so many couples experience, I am so glad that we have our lovely little family together. That you are the father of my children makes me so undeniably happy, I can’t even express it.

You are an AMAZING daddy. You give so much of yourself, and I see our son becoming more like you each and every day. From his golden locks to his magic color-changing eyes, to even the faces he makes and how he gestures – he is the spitting image of you.

From the very beginning, you and I have had fun. We have travelled the world, seen many things, and enjoyed each other’s company in every possible way.

I know that our future holds so much more excitement, and I can’t wait to embark on the next stage with you.

For now, I hope this little video will serve as a reminder of all we’ve been through and just how much I am in love with you.

Each. And. Every. Day.

You hold my heart, and you’ve earned my trust and respect and never-ending love.

I think I wanna marry you…

Bang the Drum

Cancer is a dirty word. It is a filthy, disagreeable disease that ravages its victims and takes away all dignity from not only the sufferer, but their family and friends. Given enough time on this planet, and even with no other health issues, it is commonly accepted that if you live long enough, it’ll be what kills you.

Cancer takes all sorts of forms. In my family, it has killed my my great grandfather and my grandpa. My dad has battled it. My grandmother has battled it. I fear for whoever is next. Because it is almost a certainty that one of us (at least!) will get it.

Four years ago, as I showered, I felt a lump in my armpit. It was small and hard and felt like a BB lodged under my skin. I’ll be honest and say that it didn’t worry me too much, but I did make an appointment with my doctor just to be safe. After he’d examined me, he suggested that it was likely just a cyst or inflamed gland and told me to wait a while and see if it went away. Luckily, it did.

A few months later, my friend, Charlotte, a vivacious 24 year old blonde-haired buxom beauty, had a similar experience. She came to work one day and confided that she’d felt a lump in her armpit. I suggested the same route I took – go to the doctor and get it checked, but don’t worry because it was likely nothing.

For two weeks, she came in to work, and each day I asked if she’d had it checked. She made many excuses as to why she just didn’t have time to do it – and she shrugged it off, saying that it was likely nothing – just as mine had been.

I nagged her again and again, and finally she went to the doctor. She later admitted that the lump had grown to twice the original size in those two weeks, which is the only reason she finally gave in.

Right away, she was scheduled for a biopsy, which came back positive for breast cancer. Not only that, but it was aggressive. Stage IV at 24 years old.

In the next few months this bright bubbly girl lost her entire personality, swallowed up in chemotherapy and other meds which made her sick, tired and sad. She lost her hair. She lost both breasts. And within a year, she had lost her life.

Charlotte and I were not the best of friends, and really we only knew each other a short while, each of us working for a small company and just happening to cross paths in life. By the time she had died, I had already moved on to a new role in a new company, and it was only through Facebook that I came to learn of her ultimate fate.

But that is the hard part of cancer. It affects you. Those who know you well, those who love you and those who are only on the periphery of your life. It is such a taboo subject that it will make total strangers pray for you. It makes people use words like “tragedy” or “too young” or “such a waste.”

Because that is what it is. A waste. Cancer WASTES you.

Who knows what may have been had Charlotte got checked out immediately after feeling the lump? Possibly the outcome would have been exactly the same. Or maybe it might have saved her life? We will never know. But I know that if I am ever in the same situation, I will not hesitate to get checked out.

Dexter’s New Dungarees!

Recently, the good folks at Next US Kids sent Dexter a really spiffy new set of Signature Denim Dungarees, as preparation for the Autumn 2012 season. Having enjoyed a very long relationship with Next (I practically LIVED in their stores when I was in the UK), I was thrilled to receive them and knew Dexter would be, as well.

The kid LOVES them. He wants to wear them each and every day, and quite honestly, I have had to hide them recently at the bottom of his dresser simply because in Florida, summer lasts just a little bit longer than elsewhere.

But if you ever wanted to see a kid excited about clothes, you should see how adorably he lights up as soon as you pull them out of a drawer.

The dungarees are very well made, with a gorgeous star pattern on the suspenders, which just screams AMERICA to me. And there are fashionable tatty bits on the legs which make them seem broken in and well loved right from the get go.

Dex is fascinated by all his new pockets, and when I take them off of him at night, I have to be careful to take everything out of them that he has hidden away throughout the day. The most interesting find has been a somewhat ruffled, but still very much alive LIZARD I found in his bib pocket!

We even took him out to Disney World this week, where he broke in his new duds admirably.

If you want to get your hands on some of your very own, you can buy some Signature Denim Dungarees for $37 – $40. They go from 3 months to six years! So get some for your little man today!

I have a feeling they’ll be making an appearance at Halloween this year, as my dad is dead set on taking Dex trick-or-treating and wants to go as matching farmers. :D

If you want to see them in action, check out the video we made to showcase his fun new look!

List 15 of Your Favourite Things

Well I don’t know if you ever counted it up, but in The Sound of Music, Maria only mentioned FOURTEEN things as her favourites. And she got a whole song out of it. So that got me thinking… could I write a song about my favourite things and surpass her list? Because, honestly, if you get a hard-on from schnitzel with noodles, there is something really wrong with you!

Ahem.

Anyway, I did it. I wrote a song in about 20 minutes and recorded it with my son sat on my lap. Fair warning, I am NOT a singer, and this is probably at best bad karaoke. But I aim to amuse at the very least, so I hope you enjoy my spectacularly bad songing. Yes, I’ve invented the word songing just to be clear that what I am doing is NOT considered singing in any part of the universe.

And for those who are scared of hearing my tone-deaf singing, the lyrics are below (sung to the tune of “My Favourite Things” from The Sound of Music. (By my count, there are 31 favourite things on MY list!)

Dexter, my son, who’s my reason for living
His daddy, my Mark, who never stops giving.
Picnics with fresh food do bring me much joy
These favourite things are the best with my boys!

Mark working from home means lunches together
Family walks to the park in all weather.
Sunshine is fun time, there’s romance in rain…
Driving cross country or taking a train!

Dex during nap time is such a pretty sight
Makes up for all the lost sleep in the late night
Bathtime is precious and nursing is sweet
My little Wubba sweeps me off my feet!

When I burn food, when I drop cups, when I stub my toe…
I think of my family and each of their smiles, and then I am all aglow!

Cooking for my boys is something I treasure
My morning coffee does bring me great pleasure
Blogging, and photos, and my arts and crafts
Snuggled on the couch and having some laughs.

Midnight margaritas with friends when there’s sadness
Skyping with parents brings my heart much gladness.
Christmas and Easter and Halloween brings
Smiles to our faces, they’re our favourite things!

Scrapbooking, baking and family game night.
Singing and dancing in summertime moonlight.
Reading some stories and rocking to sleep.
My precious memories forever to keep.

When it’s raining, when we’re flat broke, when we want to roam…
We still have each other and that is a lot, as we are each other’s home!

When I burn food, when I drop cups, when I stub my toe…
I think of my family and each of their smiles, and then I am all aglow!
