Getting It Together

After a couple of weeks break, and a lot of rest, I’ve started to perk up a bit. I’m lucky that I have such positive supportive people around me. Mark and the kids always lift my spirits and keep me happy,  no matter what else is going on in my life. And while things could always be better, I can’t really complain about much.

So I thought I’d better remind myself of all the wonderful things going on in my world today and every day.

The Worst Feeling in the World

Is there any feeling worse than knowing your child is sick? Is there anything more disheartening than seeing him with sunken eyes, and feeling his little arms holding onto you so tightly and breathing that warm wet breath into your neck while tears fall on your shoulder?

On Monday morning, I dropped Dexter off to his daycare around 9 AM, as usual. We’d had a lovely family fun filled weekend, and although he was a bit reluctant to go into his classroom, I didn’t see anything unusual in his behavior.

Two hours later, as Daniel and I cuddled together on the couch, my phone rang. My heart dropped into my stomach as I noticed the caller ID – “Dexter’s Daycare.” Immediately I knew SOMETHING was wrong, as they’d never called before, and any time they’ve ever needed a word, they have left me a note on the sign-in sheet.

I answered the call and it was Carrie, the owner. She said that Dexter “was throwing up,” and she sounded sort of upset. I assured her I’d be right over, and I told Mark to watch the baby while I got in the car and sped over. As I got up to the doors, I saw my little man walking toward me with Carrie. He gave a big smile and started to run, but then his face went pale and he slowed back down again, clearly not feeling well.

I assured Carrie that he’d been fine all weekend and that I’d never have sent him if I thought he was ill, and she assured me that he wasn’t the first and wouldn’t be the last to paint the nursery in splashes of vomit.

I brought the little guy home and immediately noticed that despite them having made use of the change of clothes we send with him every day, he STUNK. So I decided a bath was the best thing for him.

sick in the bath

The bags under his eyes and the sallow skin he sported were so much worse when he was soaking wet. He suddenly seemed so very small and meek. Just the day before, Mark and I had been talking about how pudgy he has become, with a tiny little pot belly and a chubby little chin. But I couldn’t see it at all anymore… My baby was sick, and though it had been only a couple of hours, I felt he was wasting away.

After his bath, I went to put him in some pajamas, and I was astounded when he put up no fuss at wearing his footie PJs, which he usually doesn’t want to wear.

I gave him a glass of pink lemonade with a crazy straw, and I let him suck on his brother’s pacifier, and he slipped one of my flowery headbands on his head. He seemed quite well in himself, so I sat him on the couch and put on his favorite cartoons.

sick boy

It wasn’t long at all before the lovely pink lemonade made a reappearance. The kid puked every last bit of it up, along with whatever he’d eaten that morning. He sprayed it all over himself and all over me. A change of clothes for both of us was in order, but it was no time at all before he threw up again. And again.

All day long, he was sick. Punctuated by covering his eyes and laying on the floor for short periods before he would raise his little head, look across at me pitifully and then be sick all over again. Mark started trying to teach him to throw up in the toilet, and it broke my heart each time, because you could see that Dex really wanted to please us by doing so, but a two year old isn’t quite equipped to make it to the bathroom when they need to vomit.

sleepy sick

Toward the evening, and after a full day of him rejecting every drink I offered, I finally thought to give him some popsicles. He downed THREE of them in no time at all, while pedalling his bike out on the balcony. And he managed to keep them down! I was very pleased, and he started to look like his normal self again.

popsicles

Mark suggested giving him some food, and I was adamant that the only things he could eat were what you’d find on the BRAT diet – namely, Bananas, Rice, Apple Sauce or Toast. And we had none of it.

So I headed out to the store to get some supplies. I figured I ought to pick up some Pedialyte, as well, just to ensure proper hydration. And I wanted to have a look at the pharmacy to see if there was anything a toddler could take for nausea.

When I returned home with bananas and bread, as well as some Baby Emetrol, I was excited to get him fed up. But no sooner had he followed me into the kitchen that he threw up all over the floor. As I stared at it, I started to wonder about what I was seeing… it looked to have bits of chicken in it. He hadn’t eaten chicken in the last few days, so what was going on?

And then Mark said that he’d fed him a chicken quesadilla.

!!!!

What?!

Apparently in the short time I’d been gone, Dex had shown an interest in Mark’s food and instead of heeding my BRAT guidelines, Mark figured the food would be fine. Clearly it wasn’t. Grr.

A banana was devoured, but it, too, came back up. The kid wouldn’t take any of the medicine I’d brought, either, nor did he really want the pedialyte. He clearly just had enough.

After he threw up in his bed as we tried to get him to sleep, we finally decided that Mark would sleep in the living room with him while I kept the baby in the bed with me.

Sadly, Dexter spent much of the night being sick everywhere, and Mark had to deal with it all.

The next day was much better, in that after his last bout of vomiting at 5AM, he finally managed to get some sleep. He spent the whole day in a corner of the living room, having made himself a little bed out of couch cushions and hiding his head under a frisbee.

I did try and get him in to the doctor, but I wound up taking him to the Urgent Care centre when we couldn’t get in. After waiting an hour in the waiting room, I got a call from Mark saying that our doctor had called in a prescription for anti-nausea suppositories and I should just leave. So I did. We went home so he could rest some more.

Occasionally, he’d come sit on my lap, holding me as tightly as he could and cuddling my bosom. I held him tightly right back, offering him small sips of pedialyte when he needed it, and after many many hours, he started to improve.

poorly boy

sick cuddles

Sleep was pretty much the best medicine, and he had an awful lot of that.

The rest of the day passed pretty easily, and though I’d had a small worry when Daniel threw up green liquid all over me and the rocking chair, it turned out to be a one-off and not an acquired illness. Whew!

We did have slight concerns when Mark went in to change his diaper and found a giant mess of diarrhea, but it seems to have been the final clean out he needed to get his spirits and good health back.

Today he is back at daycare, and hopefully he will be okay. He seems much happier in himself, and I am pleased to have got through such an awful couple of days with a sickly toddler. Truly there is no greater sadness for a parent than knowing your baby is poorly.

But similarly, the elation you feel when they get better is almost unparalleled.

The Winter Garden Farmers Market

Fun at the Farmer's Market

On Saturday, we woke up a bit later than usual due to a long night with cranky kids. As soon as I checked my phone, I realised that I had missed a text from my good friend, Amy, reminding me that we’d had plans to hit the Farmers Market together in Winter Garden. She’d sent the text about 20 minutes previously asking if we were still going or not, and I immediately texted back to ask if I was too late. She assured me I wasn’t, and so I hastily gathered the family and got everyone ready as quickly as possible.

Amy and I had had plans SEVERAL times over the last few months, and something always seemed to come up to keep me from getting out there. This time I was determined. So once we were ready, we got in our cars and drove the 30 minutes up the road to see what we’d been missing all this time.

I love me a good Farmer’s Market. After years living in English market towns, I am always ready with cash in hand to support local small businesses who sell good quality food and goods. And the Winter Garden Farmers Market didn’t disappoint!

winter garden

The quaint town is very reminiscent of the town I grew up in. It’s a beautiful place full of character, and I loved that Amy took us the back way in. It was a beautiful day, and it was lovely to just get out for a nice walk, if nothing else.

Our first stop was the coffee cart, where Amy introduced us to her favorite vendor. The brew was delicious and cheap at only $2 a cup! A real German baker was selling breads and pastries, so Amy got a lovely chocolate croissant and we headed over to sit by the fountains and enjoy our breakfast.

Dexter was having a ball taking in the sights and sounds, not to mention sharing in Amy’s delicious pastry. He played in the fountain a bit with daddy, and he took great pleasure in making trips to the garbage bin across the courtyard to throw away our refuse. He even “helped” Amy when it came time to change her baby’s diaper!

live music

In the middle of the crowds was a small outdoor section where a musician played cover songs for everyone to enjoy. There was plenty of seating in the open sunshine, and were it not for our small baby, we might have sat down to enjoy it. As it was, keeping him happy and out of the sun meant we had to keep to the shadows of the stalls. Of course, we did get to HEAR the music, which was wonderful and made the day even more colorful.

mama's new hat

As we explored the stalls, I took pleasure in all of the different items on display. I fell in love with a beautiful sun hat for sale by an English woman, and after I paid my $30 for it, we chatted about “the old country” a bit. She was from Winchester, and I didn’t live very far from her, which was quite nice.

One of the awesome stalls we encountered was a “Cupcake” stand which sold savory cupcake creations. Amy and I each tried one, and they were delicious! Mine was the Hefty Heavenly Hashbrown, which was described as “homemade southern style hashbrown casserole, topped with fresh scrambled eggs, diced ham steak, sautéed bell pepper and onion, finished with three cheese sauce and croissant croutons.”  And Amy tried Big Bubba’s Biscuit, which was “A flaky buttermilk biscuit layered with homemade creamy sausage gravy, topped with cheesy scrambled eggs, finished with crispy bacon.” They had others (such as Thunder Thigh Thanksgiving, Chubby Chaser Chicken Alfredo, etc), and they informed us that they get their ingredients as often as possible from OTHER local venders. So supporting them helps support the rest of the market as well!

Cupcakes

Toward the end of our explorations, we came across a man with a lovely birdie. Dexter was in awe of it, and Amy had a deep conversation with him about her love of birds, and how much work they entail. I can’t actually remember what type of bird this one was, but it sure was pretty!

We had such great fun exploring the market together, and while we didn’t end up buying any of the fresh produce on offer, we for sure will be back soon to do just that. Unfortunately, I took ill toward the end, and we had to make a hasty retreat back home, but it was an amazingly fun day, nonetheless.

friends

I always enjoy spending time with Amy. She knows a little bit about everything, and she’s always good for exploring new places. Plus her daughter is just amazingly cute! I think that there are some people you are friends with through experience (such as motherhood) and friends you would make no matter what. I think Amy is one I would be friends with no matter what, but our shared experiences of motherhood help to bond us, as well.

Our day was such a success, and between yummy food, friendly people and a gorgeous setting, it’s a day I hope to repeat again soon. Winter Garden is lovely, and the Farmers Market is definitely one you’ll want to check out if you’re ever in central Florida!

I mean, look what a happy family it made us!

Easter at Cocoa Beach

easter sunday at cocoa beach

So yesterday was Easter Sunday, a religious holiday for some, but for us a chance to spend a little bit of quality time as a family. It being Dexter’s THIRD Easter and Daniel’s first, we were a little more laid back than we have been in years past.

The day started with Dexter having to be pointed in the right direction of his Easter basket, which was sitting in plain sight on the couch. He’s not very observant, but he’s getting better.  This year, despite having big plans for an all out Easter extravaganza, the fact that we weren’t yet in our new house meant that we had to scale back and buy a pre-made basket. We went with a Cars theme, as he seems to really like Cars items. We bought it from Target for $15, and we chose it because it was light on candy and high on toys, including a rocket launcher and a race track!

Easter Morning

We also bought him a new superhero t-shirt. After the success of his batman shirt (with cape!) that his grandma got him, we spent $12 to get him a Superman tshirt with corresponding cape. He wore it out and about, and so many people came up to ask where we got it. It’s a little big on him, but it looks so darn cute!

Super Man

After a morning of playing with toys, we gathered the troops and all of our energy and headed down to the coast to enjoy some beach fun. We ended up taking the so-called scenic route to get there, but the kids slept most of the way there, and we arrived with a hunger for adventure (and a hunger for McDonalds, which we indulged just before we got there!).

Mama in Sun Hat

Daddy

It wasn’t too crowded, and I was excited as I got to wear my new sun hat. Dexter had an absolute ball, playing in the sand sand splashing in the waves.

A bit of driftwood became a fun shovel, and he marvelled at the way his skin sparkled in the sunshine due to the fine coating of sand he managed to accrue.

Beach Boys

Most of the time, I sat in our beach tent, making sure that Daniel was safely out of the sunshine, and Mark played with Dexter, chasing him up and down the beach and tiring him out more effectively than anything else could.

Mom and Dan

Being Daddy

Mom and Dex

I did manage to take a few minutes to play with Dexter in the surf, and we had fun jumping over the tiny little waves. While daddy had to go off to use the restroom, he even laid with me on the towels, sunning himself and gorging on salt water taffy (a favorite treat!).

We stayed for about three hours before dragging ourselves out of the beautiful sunshine and heading home. Of course, the kids were covered in so much sand that we ended up just stripping them down and letting them ride home mostly naked.

If you ever want to make sure your kid sleeps well, take them to the beach! We were shocked that Dexter slept the whole way home, despite having already napped on the way there! That never happens!

Exhausted Baby

I hope you enjoyed your Easter Sunday, whatever you chose to do. Did you spend it with family? Friends? Any interesting stories to share?

I’ll leave you with one last photo (or two really). This was from when we stopped at McDonalds for lunch. A bird perched itself on the hood of our car, and I managed to snatch a photo just as it flew away. For some reason, it just seemed quite beautiful to me. I hope you agree.
