Today’s prompt in the 31 day blog challenge is:
10 songs you love right now
It’s a subject close to my heart, as I am, as I have expressed before, a total music lover. And I am completely undiscerning in my tastes. I love every genre equally. From rap to country, from pop to metal. I hop into bed with the classics and wake up with the newest craze. I can cuddle up to Bach before I Roll Over Beethoven (bad pun, I know!).
I was lucky enough to be raised by two parents with completely disparate musical tastes which allowed me to experience the complete spectrum of lyrical genius. I am buddies with Buddy Holly. I love to recline with Patsy Cline. I am N’Sync with all the boy bands. Seriously, I could go on all day.
But I guess the question of the moment is, What songs are running through my head RIGHT NOW?
In My Mind – Amanda F’n Palmer
A brilliant song, with a brilliant video from a brilliant singer. I’ve been in love with this woman for years and the fact that she also married my favourite all time author just cemented her awesomeness. This song is so perfectly perfect that it often runs through my head for days at a time. This is one of those times.
Doll on a Music Box/Truly Scrumptious – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang OST
If you have never seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, you are missing out. One of the greatest musical scenes of all time sees Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes dressed up as toys and singing a beautiful duet of two supremely awesome songs. The tunes intertwine in such a wonderful way that it will make you wistful and happy at the same time.
Somebody That I Used to Know – Gotye
I know it’s everywhere at the moment and that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but since the first time I heard it, I LOVED this song. It is such an old school Genesis vibe, and it harkens back to another time when music was kitsch and kooky. I can take or leave the video, but the tune is quite catchy and ever so haunting. It has me singing out every time.
We Are Young – Fun
Probably a song for the younger set, but honestly, it makes me happy. For the few moments that this song is on, I can almost imagine myself back in high school, rocking out on the graduation vibe and promising friendship forever to people I will never see again. It promises that for one night only, we can indulge in childish things, holding on to the youth that we’ll never get back. I wish I had an anthem like this when I was 18.
Moves Like Jagger – Maroon 5
This is currently one of my favourites for two reasons. One, I love Maroon 5 and think this song is the dog’s bollocks. But mostly it is because when it first came out, my adorable fiance happily stripped down to skinny jeans and nowt else and gave me my own personal Jagger-like dance in the living room, allowing me to wolf whistle and clap, all the while wishing I had some dolla dolla bills to stuff down his adorable happy trail. I’ll forever love that memory, and this song will always bring it back.
The Walk – Imogen Heap
This song is a classic from an amazing singer. If you haven’t heard it, go to iTunes right this minute and buy it. Or don’t. But it is good. For me, it is the soundtrack to my divorce. Which you would think would be a bad thing, but it’s actually a song that really got me through it. If you’ve read my bio, you’ll know that I have managed to stay good friends with my ex-husband, and that is a great thing. More people should do it. But with our impending move to Florida, a part of me is lamenting the fact that I’ll probably never see him again. I hope I will. But I worry I won’t. And so this song has been running through my head, allowing me a bit of hope that it’s not the end for us.
Allegory – Murray Attaway
This song is a true classic. I first heard it on a train from London to Norfolk when it came up on my MP3 player. It played as I watched the countryside roll by. It starts out slowly and builds momentum, much like the train I was on. It has always struck me as the PERFECT song for a journey. It also starts out with the line, “I see the moon and the moon sees me,” which is also the first line of my son’s very favourite lullabye. So this song is often in my head, and I never get sick of it.
Taxi Ride – Tori Amos
My ex got me into Tori Amos many many moons ago and this one is probably my all time favourite of her songs. Who knows what the lyrics even mean? With Tori it’s kind of hard to tell. But I love this song and listen to it several times a week.
I’ll Follow You Into the Dark – Deathcab for Cutie
Possibly a bit cliché, but it’s one of those ones that has special meaning in my relationship. I put it on a CD for Mark when we first got together, and he will always get a tear in his eye when he listens to it. We always end up holding hands when we hear it and exchange one of those meaningful glances that couples often do when they want to say everything with a look.
Sabotage – Beastie Boys
With the death of MCA yesterday, this song has been running through my head over and over. I love the Boys, and they will always provide a soundtrack for a certain section of my life. And this song is probably one of the best they ever did.
